Daily Ink: How to Cultivate a Daily Writing Habit

I will admit that today’s post is aspirational, I am no expert and I have days when not a single word is contributed to my writing projects. But I never let that discourage me as I’m always coming back to the desire to write and I know I have it in me to build this skill.

Set specific goals: Determine what you want to achieve with your writing habit. It could be completing a novel, writing a certain number of words per day, or simply expressing your thoughts regularly. Make sure your goals are realistic and attainable.

Create a schedule: Set aside a specific time each day for writing. Consistency is key to forming a habit, so choose a time when you’re least likely to be interrupted and commit to writing during that time every day.

Start small: Begin with a manageable writing goal, such as writing for just 10 or 15 minutes a day. As you become more comfortable with the habit, you can gradually increase the amount of time you spend writing.

Remove distractions: Minimize distractions during your writing time by turning off notifications, finding a quiet place to write, and using tools like website blockers if necessary. Create a conducive environment that allows you to focus solely on your writing.

Find your writing space: Designate a specific area for writing, whether it’s a cozy corner in your home, a local cafe, or a quiet park bench. Having a dedicated writing space can help signal to your brain that it’s time to focus.

Call out procrastination: I am guilty of putting off getting started until I have the right pen/note book/program/clean desk. Its all rubbish! You will never have the perfect space, all the free time, nothing else to do – call yourself out if you start to say “I’ll get started when (add excuse here)”. Just start. Don’t wait for perfect, start however you can.

Experiment with different writing prompts: If you’re struggling to come up with ideas, try using writing prompts to kickstart your creativity. There are many websites, books, and apps that offer writing prompts on various topics.

Write first, edit later: Don’t worry about perfection during your writing sessions. The most important thing is to get your ideas down on paper. You can always revise and edit later. Silence your inner critic and allow yourself to write freely.

Reward yourself: Celebrate your progress and milestones along the way. Reward yourself for sticking to your writing habit, whether it’s treating yourself to a favorite snack, taking a break to relax, or indulging in a hobby you enjoy.

Stay accountable: Share your writing goals with a friend, family member, or writing group. Accountability can help keep you motivated and accountable, as you’ll be more likely to stick to your habit if you know someone else is counting on you.

Be patient and persistent: Building a daily writing habit takes time and effort, so be patient with yourself. If you miss a day or fall off track, don’t be too hard on yourself. Instead, focus on getting back on track and staying consistent over the long term. Keep reminding yourself why you started writing in the first place and stay committed to your goals.

I hope you find these helpful, I’ve been working hard to implement these, its an ongoing process!

Until next time,

Cath
