Inspiration is a curious thing. It doesn’t always arrive in grand, sweeping gestures or neatly wrapped ideas. For me, it often sneaks in through the cracks of everyday life—a snippet of overheard conversation, an inspiring image, or an unexpected moment that leaves my imagination spinning. Over time, I’ve realized that these flashes of inspiration aren’t random at all. They feel too purposeful, too perfectly timed. Surely, there must be a force behind them.
And so, I’ve decided that I must have a muse. Her name is Nixie.
Nixie isn’t your average, ethereal inspiration fairy. She’s a playful, sprite-like presence who loves to leave little story trinkets all over the place for me to find. Picture a whimsical creature darting around, dropping hints and nudges in the form of fleeting ideas – more often than not, doing so when I should be doing something other than writing/daydreaming. A peculiar shadow cast by a tree might become the setting for a pivotal scene. A vintage book cover in a thrift shop might spark an entire subplot. A chance encounter with a stranger might suddenly breathe life into a character I’ve been struggling to flesh out.
These aren’t just coincidences, I’ve come to know them as “Nixie’s Trinkets.”
I’ve learned to pay attention when Nixie is at work. She’s subtle but persistent, and once you’ve tuned into her ways, it’s impossible to ignore her whispers.
She’ll nudge me with ideas in the most unexpected places. A rainy afternoon walk might inspire a poignant turning point in a story. The glow of the sunrise might remind me of the quiet hope my characters need in their darkest moments. When I’m stuck, unsure how to move a plot forward, Nixie will whisper an insight that unravels the knot and sets the story flowing again.
Nixie’s Whispers aren’t always fully formed. Often, they’re fragments—a single word, an emotion, or a line of dialogue that doesn’t make sense until I sit with it. But that’s part of the magic. She doesn’t hand me a completed puzzle; she gives me the pieces and trusts me to put them together.
There’s something freeing about believing in Nixie. It reminds me that creativity doesn’t have to be a constant uphill battle. When the ideas aren’t flowing, it’s not because I’ve run out of them—it’s just that Nixie’s busy planting more trinkets for me to find later.
And when the ideas do come, they feel like little gifts. Even if a story takes a turn I wasn’t expecting or an idea emerges from the most random of moments, I’ve learned to follow where Nixie leads. She has a knack for knowing what a story needs, even before I do.
If you’ve ever felt those random bursts of inspiration, maybe you have a Nixie of your own. Maybe your muse has a different name or personality, but they’re there, leaving you sparks and whispers to guide your creative journey.
For me, Nixie has made the process of writing feel like a collaboration—a delightful partnership with a mischievous spirit who loves stories as much as I do. And while she’s not always predictable (or particularly patient), she’s always there, ready to nudge me toward the next idea.
So, here’s to Nixie and her endless trail of trinkets. May we all have a muse who makes the creative process a little more magical.
Until next time,
Cath
